Food, shopping, and non-stop FUN on our recent Kyoto & Osaka “Mahalo” Shopping Tour!

We explored Kyoto’s rich history with visits to Tenryuji Temple and the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, then strolled through the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine. Shopping was a blast at spots like Nishiki Market, Teramachi Shopping Arcade, Kuromon Ichiba Market, and Shinsaibashi Shopping Arcade, where we discovered everything from local treats to unique souvenirs. Plus, we got hands-on with Surikomi Yuzen Dyeing, a traditional Kyoto art form!

Curry and ramen lunch in Kyoto!

Hands-on experience making surikomi yuzen (brush dyed yuzen). Since the patterns are dyed by placing a paper stencil over a table mat you can make an authentic piece, even if this is your first time.

The four kilometer long tunnel of scarlet torii gates was featured on the film Memoirs of a Geisha.

Each torii is sponsored from private person and companies.

After Fushimi Inari Shrine, we went to Gion Street, Kyoto's most famous geisha district, for some shopping.

Ohagi no Tanbaya is a famous mochi shop in Gion.

Getting lunch at Nishiki Market, also known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen”.

The area is a narrow, five block long shopping street lined by more than one hundred shops and restaurants.

Fresh seafood, produce, knives and cookware, and is a great place to find seasonal foods and Kyoto specialties.

Day of leisure and dinner on our own. This restaurant was highly recommended and is located in Osaka Station near our Hotel Granvia.
