Late June through August is preferred by most travelers, as this is when daylight is long, and wildlife sightings are more common (especially for bears and whales). It’s also considered the best time for glacier viewing and outdoor excursions, like kayaking or fishing.

Depending on your itinerary, you may sail past impressive tidewater glaciers such as Glacier Bay National Park, Hubbard Glacier, or Dawes Glacier. In Juneau, many visit Mendenhall Glacier, which is just a short drive from the port.

Alaska is home to an incredible range of wildlife. Inland, travelers may spot the famous “Big Five”: grizzly bears, wolves, moose, caribou, and dall sheep. From the ship, keep an eye out for humpback whales, sea otters, and harbor seals playing in the water. And overhead, bald eagles are a common and unforgettable sight throughout Alaska.

Alaska’s coastal weather varies. You can expect cool mornings, warmer afternoons, and the occasional drizzle. Packing layers is key: think light waterproof jackets, fleece pullovers, and quick-dry clothing for active excursions.
